Meet The Director
Ms. Rita Wilson
I have the pleasure of starting my 17th year of teaching at Lewisburg Middle School. I taught on the Mississippi Gulf Coast 15 years before moving to Lewisburg Middle School. My first 10 years at Hancock High and 5 years at Long Beach Middle School. Last year, Lewisburg Middle School Choirs had a successful year. The Advanced Ladies and Guy's earned superior ratings and trophies in Performance at the District Festival. They both advanced to the State Level Choral Festival and Advanced Ladies earned a Superior in Performance and Advanced Guy's earned a Superior rating in Sightreading. Both groups brought home trophies from both festivals. At the beginning of last year, I talked with the students about goals. Goals are something I talk with my students every year. It is important to set goals both personally and as a group. I was very pleased with my students accomplishments last year! My expectations are high for my students but it will pay off for them in the end. I hope to instill high standards in my students by being an example to them with a hard work ethic. My students took the goals we set and went above and beyond expectations. One goal we have discussed in my classes this year is how important it is to build better relationships with one another in choir this year. We talked about how important it is to have a cohesiveness as a group. As a choir we will function as a family. When one person is down, we will build them up. Having a strong bond is going to be the key to success as a group. I have no doubt that Lewisburg Middle School Choirs will rise above and exceed their goals this year. I love music, especially choral music and I hope I can instill the love to my students.
My educational background:
I have a bachelors and a Masters of Music from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. I was a church choir director for 17 years (Union Baptist Church (5 years) and Diamondhead United Methodist Church (12 years). I was on staff as an adjunct voice instructor this past year at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Gulfport, MS. I have served as the Mississippi Music Educator's Junior High District VIII Choral Chairperson (2012) for 2 years on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Please visit this page often for updates. Do not hesitate to contact me through the contact me link on this page if you have questions or concerns. I will do my best to contact you as soon as possible. I like to keep communication lines open with parents.
I am looking forward to a wonderful school year.! I would like to end with sharing something a former choir director taught me that I would like to leave with you, "When better is possible, good enough is unacceptable." (Meaning basically there is always room for improvement. To say that good enough is okay is unacceptable. It is better to strive for excellence (better than good) in everything!)
Musically Yours,
Rita Wilson
